Meaning

“I felt like pinks were a little too reminiscent of the lipstic flag, so I went with a redder color, and opted for violets and indigo since violets are so commonly associated with lesbianism. I also worked out some rough meanings. But yea a pretty lesbian flag is what we deserve.”
— Unveiling of the lesbian flag by VonKarn

Dark purple = butch and gender nonconforming lesbians

Violet = violets (commonly associated with women who love women)
